Next Generation è un programma speciale promosso da C.U.R.A. Centro Umbro di Residenze Artistiche (riconosciuto da Regione Umbria e Ministero della Cultura), realizzato in collaborazione con La MaMa ETC di New York, CultureHub di New York, e ITI International Theatre Institute, dedicato ad artisti performativi giovani ed emergenti per lo sviluppo di progetti ancora in fase iniziale.
Next Generation offre una residenza intensiva per progetti ancora in fase di concepimento.
Per l’edizione 2023 lanciamo la sfida di provare ad immaginare idee di progetti che focalizzano la loro ricerca in particolare (ma non esclusivamente) sui temi di:
- Arte e Nuove tecnologie: il rapporto tra arti performative e nuove tecnologie digitali
- Arte e sviluppo di comunità: processi creativi partecipativi con le comunità locali, soprattutto legate alle nuove generazioni.
Next Generation vuole proporsi come incubatore di nuovi progetti ad uno stadio ancora embrionale. Non verranno accettati progetti già realizzati, anche solo in parte, o in fase avanzata di sviluppo. Obiettivo primario è infatti sostenere nuovi talenti e nutrire l’emergere di nuove interessanti idee performative.
Next Generation seleziona 5 artisti singoli/compagnie/collettivi/gruppi informali, (per un massimo di 15 partecipanti totali) provenienti da paesi europei ed extra-europei operanti nell’ambito delle arti performative contemporanee (teatro, musica, danza, interdisciplinare, ecc.)
Next Generation prevede un periodo di residenza di 15 giorni in Umbria dal 20 agosto al 3 settembre 2023.
Gli artisti/gruppi selezionati trascorreranno una prima settimana di lavoro – dal 20 al 26 agosto – dislocati presso le diverse sedi del Centro C.U.R.A. a Spoleto, Foligno, Perugia e Gubbio e la seconda settimana – dal 27 agosto al 3 settembre – tutti riuniti presso la sede de La Mama Umbria International a Spoleto, allo scopo di favorire la condivisione tra i partecipanti dei singoli percorsi, scambiare feedback, commenti e suggerimenti.
Next Generation prevede la partecipazione di tutor, mentor e formatori internazionali che accompagneranno il percorso di ideazione e sviluppo delle idee progettuali. Artisti locali e internazionali (attori, musicisti, drammaturghi, registi), insieme a curatori riconosciuti nel settore, saranno invitati a seguire i partecipanti in residenza col compito di stimolare il processo creativo ed incoraggiare lo scambio e il dialogo tra i vari partecipanti.
A conclusione della residenza è prevista una giornata di condivisione collettiva con un pubblico scelto (tra cui artisti, operatori, curatori) durante la quale i partecipanti potranno presentare, in una modalità che sarà concordata con i tutor e gli organizzatori, il percorso sviluppato nel corso della residenza.
Next Generation prevede la possibilità per uno o più artista/compagnia di essere scelto per un ulteriore periodo di residenza all’interno di C.U.R.A., secondo modalità e tempi che saranno concordati con gli organizzatori, al fine di approfondire e sviluppare ulteriormente il proprio progetto artistico.
Next Generation incontra SPAZIO ZETA.
Durante il periodo di svolgimento di Next Generation si terrà, nei territori di Foligno e Spoleto, anche la residenza Spazio Zeta, un progetto di ascolto, confronto e creazione tra artisti e le giovani generazioni. Spazio Zeta si configura come una terra senza padroni, dove artisti selezionati svilupperanno l’aspetto creativo a partire dall’incontro con le giovani generazioni locali, attraverso l’ascolto reciproco, lavorando insieme, in contesti e luoghi differenti (spazi pubblici, musei, biblioteche, scuole, oratori, campi estivi). Pertanto durante il periodo di residenza di entrambi i progetti saranno facilitate relazioni, contaminazioni e scambi di idee e vedute tra i diversi partecipanti nell’ottica di una reciproca crescita artistica.

In 2023 C.U.R.A. launches the challenge of supporting project ideas that focus their research in particular (but not exclusively) on the themes of:
- Art and New Technologies: relationship between performing arts and technologies
- Art and community development: participatory creative processes with local communities, especially younger generations
Next Generation aims to be an incubator for new projects at an embryonic stage. Projects already completed, even partly, and in any case at an advanced stage of development, will not be accepted. The purpose is to support new talents and nurture the emergence of new, interesting performative ideas
Next Generation is open to a maximum of 5 single artists/companies (and in any case to a maximum number of 15 total participants). Collectives/informal groups, from European and non-European countries operating in the field of contemporary performing arts (theater, music, dance, interdisciplinary, etc. )
Next Generation provides for a 15-day artistic residency in Umbria from 20 August to 3 September 2023.
The selected artists/groups will spend a first week of work – from 20 to 26 August – located in the spaces provided by C.U.R.A. in the territories of Spoleto, Foligno, Perugia and Gubbio, and the second week – from 27 August to 3 September – all participants will be gathered at La Mama Umbria in Spoleto, in order to encourage sharing among the participants of all groups,, exchanging feedback, comments and tips.
Next Generation provides for the further participation of local and international artists (actors, musicians, playwrights, directors), tutors, and curators selected by C.U.R.A., who will be invited to follow the retreat as mentors, offering optional activities aimed at stimulating the creative process, and encouraging exchange and dialogue among participants. All participants will have the opportunity to live and work together, to share their processes and provide constructive feedbacks, comments and suggestions.
At the end of the retreat, all participants will showcase their work (choosing the most appropriate form, according to C.U.R.A. and mentors) for a selected public composed mainly of artists and professionals in the field of the performing arts.
Next Generation provides the possibility for one or more artist/company to apply for a further residency period within the projects of C.U.R.A., according to terms and times that will be agreed with the organizers, in order to advance the development of their artistic project.
Next Generation meets SPAZIO ZETA
Parallel to Next Generation, another residency also held in the territories of Foligno and Spoleto. Spazio Zeta is a project of listening, comparison and creation between artists and the younger generations. Spazio Zeta is configured as a land without masters, where selected artists will have the opportunity to develop the creative aspect of performing, starting from the meeting with the local younger generations, through mutual listening, working together in different contexts and places (public spaces, museums, libraries, schools, oratories, or summer camps).
Therefore, during the residency period of both projects, collaborating and exchanging ideas and views will be facilitated between the two groups of participants in order to stimulate mutual artistic growth.
